Synopsis
Mick Hucknall walks through the English countryside and the coastal town of Whitby, carrying luggage as he sings about fear, regret, family conflict, and the difficult step into adulthood. The landscape and historic ruins give the performance a reflective, almost autobiographical mood. Along the way, he encounters the other members of Simply Red in unexpected local roles, while memories and solitary travel suggest a young man leaving home behind. The video ends with Hucknall boarding a train, implying movement toward an uncertain future.
Factoids & Trivia
- The video was filmed around Whitby in North Yorkshire. Prominent locations include Whitby Abbey and the famous 199 Steps leading up from the harbor.
- The other members of Simply Red appear as local cricket players. Fritz McIntyre is the exception, appearing as a one-man band.
- The closing railway scenes were filmed at and around Goathland station on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
- "Holding Back the Years" was written by Mick Hucknall when he was 17 while living in his father's house. It was first performed by his earlier group, the Frantic Elevators.
- The repeated "I'll keep holding on" chorus was added several years after the original song had been written, when Hucknall was working with Simply Red.
- Hucknall has said that the song reflects his childhood and his strained relationship with his parents, especially his father.
- The trumpet solo performed in the video contains a noticeable lip-sync mistake. Tim Kellett later pointed out that his fingers do not match the recorded solo.
- Released as the third single from Simply Red's 1985 debut album, Picture Book, the song became the band's first US number one.
