Synopsis

Shudder To Think perform amid a feverish pirate-world tableau aboard a decaying vessel. Craig Wedren appears as a flamboyant, sexually charged figure while the band moves through theatrical poses, rough-hewn costumes and confrontational close-ups. Guitarist Nathan Larson hacks at pieces of meat, adding grotesque violence to the video's erotic atmosphere. The imagery deliberately blurs camp, danger and decadence, creating a surreal visual counterpart to the song's angular, sexually suggestive art-rock. Rather than following a conventional narrative, the clip plays like a fragment of a doomed maritime fantasy.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The band developed the video's concept with Jesse Peretz around the influence of Jean Genet's novel "Querelle de Brest," a story steeped in eroticism, criminality and sailor culture.
  • The shoot was completed in a single day on a rusted-out ghost barge that could be rented for parties and concerts.
  • MuchMusic in Canada banned the video, citing what it considered unnecessary cannibalism and necrophilia.
  • Craig Wedren later described the clip as an earnest attempt by a still-developing band to look glamorous and sexually assured. He felt its awkwardness, ambiguity and "bad '90s non-fashion" became part of its charm.
  • "Hit Liquor" came from "Pony Express Record," Shudder To Think's 1994 major-label debut for Epic. The album's difficult rhythms, glam-rock gestures and unconventional vocal arrangements made the song an unusually abrasive choice for mainstream promotion.
  • The video has remained one of the band's most discussed visual artifacts, helped by its later circulation online after limited television exposure.
