Synopsis

Pulp perform inside what appears to be an old people's home, where younger men disguised as elderly residents flirt with women and act out the song's themes of aging, desire and mortality. Jarvis Cocker later rides a stairlift upward through a stark, otherworldly space, turning an everyday aid into a surreal passage toward the unknown. The video's deliberately artificial setting and exaggerated makeup balance dark humor with the song's reminder that youth is temporary.

Factoids & Trivia

• The video was filmed at Stoke Newington Town Hall in London, which supplied the old people's home setting. The stairlift sequences were filmed separately at White City Studio.

• Its visual concept was inspired by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's 1946 film "A Matter of Life and Death," particularly its imagery of movement between earthly and celestial realms.

• The young men were made up to look old rather than being played by elderly actors. Jarvis Cocker later said this helped suggest that looking old had temporarily become fashionable.

• The stairlift was intended to carry Cocker to heaven, but Stannah rejected that idea because the company did not want its product associated with death. The destination was changed to a more abstract, space-like setting.

• The video was produced by Hammer & Tongs and used a theatrical, deliberately constructed style that matched the darker, more cinematic mood of Pulp's "This Is Hardcore" era.

• John Currin's painting "The Never Ending Story" was associated with the video's art direction and the wider visual campaign surrounding the song.
