Synopsis

Placebo perform "Nancy Boy" inside a brightly colored, rapidly shifting environment filled with distorted faces, flashing lights, and surreal visual interruptions. Brian Molko and Stefan Olsdal appear to merge and transform as the video moves between band performance and unsettling tableaux. A figure is restrained to a table, a woman applies a defibrillator to a man, and bizarre images such as a bathtub filled with legs and a walking fist intensify the video's deliberately disorienting, gender-fluid atmosphere.

• Steve Hewitt's face was blurred throughout the video because he was still contractually committed to another band and record label at the time. He would not appear in an official Placebo release with his face clearly shown until the "Pure Morning" era.

• The promo was released in January 1997, shortly after "Nancy Boy" became Placebo's breakthrough single in the United Kingdom. The song reached No. 4 on the UK Singles Chart, while the band's debut album later climbed back to No. 5.

• The video's surreal imagery matches the song's deliberately confrontational treatment of gender, sexuality, and excess. Its use of facial distortion and merged identities makes the performers appear deliberately difficult to categorize.
