Synopsis

Peter Murphy appears in a stylized, performance-centered video that matches the song's movement from earthbound uncertainty toward romantic and spiritual release. Stark portrait shots and dreamlike visual textures place the singer between intimacy and abstraction, while the recurring imagery suggests attraction as something mysterious and almost otherworldly. There is no conventional storyline; instead, the clip relies on Murphy's commanding presence, shifting light, and symbolic atmosphere to mirror the song's buoyant melody and its search for the "scarlet thing" hidden within another person.

Factoids & Trivia

• "The Scarlet Thing in You" was released in 1995 as the lead single from Murphy's album *Cascade*, his fifth solo album.

• The song was co-written with Paul Statham, who also contributed guitar, keyboards, bass, and programming to the album. Pascal Gabriel produced the recording.

• Murphy later explained that the song came together almost immediately: he sang the lyric over the music in roughly the amount of time it took to perform it once. He viewed the track as an intentionally unexpected pop song within his catalog.

• Its bright, hook-driven arrangement marked a clear contrast with Murphy's darker Bauhaus associations and helped introduce the more melodic, electronic, and atmospheric direction of *Cascade*.

• The video was circulated through alternative music television in 1995, including MTV's *120 Minutes*. The program's May 28, 1995 episode included the clip.

• Murphy also performed the song on *The Jon Stewart Show* in May 1995 while promoting *Cascade*. That television performance is separate from the promotional music video.
