1st- I like the music video, song and band, but I always have questioned this music video. A music video, I think, should technically show what the band thought the song was about. Examples of these are GNR "November Rain", Metallica "Enter Sandman", and Pearl Jam "Jeremy", but "Smells Like Teen Spirit" has stood and will continue to stand the test of time because it broke down so many beariers. Why is the video good? It showed that anybody could become a rock star. It came out at a time when the world was looking for a change. It showed that the average Joe could be a rock star and opened the flood gates. It's generation X's song just like "Hey Jude" by The Beatles is our parents generation's song. It introduced the world to a new kind of music. Thats why the video is considered the best, not because it's the best video to watch (it isn't). There are better music videos I think, but non of them affeced the world like this one. It was also made at a time when mtv and vh1 were good, when it was 24 hour music videos. Remember that? Yes this song is generation x's song and unfortunatley because mtv and vh1 have changed for the worse, the latter half of generation x is getting exposed to @#$%! They will never remember the time when those stations showed "Beavis And Butt-head" and the rest of the time 24-7 music videos and the artists and videos were good then. This song marks the beginning of the end when rock n' roll music was #1. No artist has done what Nirvana did except The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. We can't do anything about it right now, so unless you are planning to change the world like these 3 artists did, pop in Nevermind into your CD player (or cassette player if you happen to have this album on tape) now and listening to Generation X's anthem and try to remember the good old days.
