Synopsis

Neil Young plays George Garfield, an aggressively cheerful local television reporter covering a gruesome highway accident. Arriving at the scene, he pushes past police and emergency personnel to reach the bloodied driver, treating the disaster as sensational live entertainment. Shot with a restless handheld camera, the video presents the reporter's shallow enthusiasm and the surrounding violence in one uninterrupted rush. Its deliberately crude news-footage style turns the song's darker mood into a sharp satire of television's appetite for spectacle.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was filmed as one continuous shot, giving the report a chaotic, unrehearsed feel.
  • The production used handheld video rather than a polished film look. The rough visual style was intended to make the fake news report feel immediate and authentic.
  • The police officers seen in the sequence were real officers rather than actors. Their participation added to the video's uncomfortable realism.
  • Filming required closing a freeway, an unusually large logistical step for a music video of its period.
  • "Touch the Night" was one of only four completed videos from Young's planned longform project for the 1986 album *Landing on Water*. The proposed project would have given every song on the album its own video.
  • Young financed the video project himself after Geffen Records declined to support the original larger concept.
  • The videos from the project used comedy and exaggerated characters to explore different sides of American life. In this case, the target is sensational local television and its treatment of real-world violence.
  • The song was released on *Landing on Water* on July 21, 1986, and reached No. 8 on the US Mainstream Rock chart.
