Synopsis

Built as an impressionistic collage, the video pairs Hunters & Collectors' abrasive post-punk track with grainy fragments of urban and industrial life. Brief glimpses of the musicians and faces emerge among machinery, movement, and heavily textured film images, creating a restless, almost documentary atmosphere instead of a conventional narrative. The rough, saturated look and abrupt editing make the clip feel like a visual extension of the band's early, percussive sound.

Factoids & Trivia

  • "Lumps Of Lead" was released in November 1982 as the lead single from the Payload EP. Despite having a music video, the single did not chart in Australia or New Zealand.
  • Filmmaker Paul Elliott recalled that the video was assembled from off-cuts from his film-school project Industrial Park. He sold a box of the unused material for the production.
  • The clip was shot on film and later transferred to video for editing and television distribution. Elliott said the production deliberately pursued a darker, more textured appearance than the brightly lit music videos common at the time.
  • The color grading pushed the reds so intensely that television technicians reportedly considered them beyond acceptable broadcast limits.
  • The video was later included on the band's 1985 VHS release The Way To Go Out, alongside "Talking To A Stranger" and "Judas Sheep."

Lyrics

Here we go down, down, down
Down upon all fours
We'll make it true, this is exactly what we do
When we're making true confessions
With our blood cuddles and piggy-back kisses
We make the beast with two backs and nothing ever misses
As we ride, ride, ride
Ride upon, ride upon
Ride upon the mouthtrap
What is this hungry thing
What is this turgid little thing
That's crawling around in my backyard again
Into it's hole, I think my hair will fall
