Synopsis
In a stark black-and-white world of miniature rooms and uncanny objects, a doll-like girl moves through a fragmented dream populated by a white rabbit, mysterious keys, locks, and symbolic props. Her body repeatedly changes size, with the shifts in scale giving the action a ritualistic, unstable quality. A heart-and-eyes paddle, eggs, and shadowy interiors add to the story's atmosphere of childhood unease. Rather than following a conventional narrative, the video unfolds as a hypnotic succession of transformations, gestures, and strange visual encounters synchronized with the song's ethereal mood.
Factoids & Trivia
- The video is also known as "Stille Nacht IV: Can't Go Wrong Without You." It is the fourth entry in the Quay Brothers' Stille Nacht series of short films.
- It followed "Are We Still Married?" and was conceived as a deliberate sequel. Several motifs return from the earlier film, including the rabbit, the doll-like girl, eggs, and an enclosed black-and-white setting.
- The girl's changing height is reinforced by placing her on scales, making her apparent weight fluctuate along with her size.
- The recurring keys, locks, and hidden spaces continue the series' interest in secret mechanisms and closed-off dream environments.
- The film was made in black and white on 35mm and runs for approximately four minutes.
- The song appears on His Name Is Alive's 1993 album "Mouth by Mouth," released by 4AD. The album version of the track runs for 3:14.
- The short was later included in "Phantom Museums: The Short Films of the Quay Brothers," helping preserve it as part of the filmmakers' broader body of experimental animation.
