Synopsis

The Grateful Dead perform "Touch of Grey" before an ecstatic concert audience, but the musicians appear as life-size skeleton marionettes rather than flesh-and-blood performers. Each puppet is styled to resemble its corresponding band member, complete with recognizable clothing and mannerisms. As the performance builds, the skeletons give way to the real band, reinforcing the song's resilient "we will survive" message. The surreal staging is punctuated by a dog running across the stage with one skeleton's lower leg, turning the band's macabre imagery into playful spectacle.

• The concert footage was filmed at Laguna Seca Recreation Area near Monterey, California, on May 9, 1987. After the show, members of the audience were readmitted so they could appear in the video.
