Synopsis

The Fixx perform inside a derelict, cluttered building as an unidentified observer monitors them from a strange control station. The band members appear isolated within the cavernous space, surrounded by discarded objects and industrial-looking details. Intercut shots of the watcher, his equipment, and the group's performance create a detached, surveilled atmosphere that suits the song's themes of emotional distance and hidden connection. Rather than presenting a linear narrative, the video builds an enigmatic visual environment around the band's moody 1986 new wave sound.

Factoids & Trivia

  • "Secret Separation" was released as the first single from The Fixx's fourth studio album, *Walkabout*, in 1986.
  • The single reached No. 19 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and topped the Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart.
  • The songwriting credits include lyricist Jeannette Obstoj alongside the five members of The Fixx.
  • Cy Curnin later described the song as concerning soulmates who meet repeatedly across different periods of time, but are not always able to function as lovers in the same life.
  • The video remains part of the band's official video catalog and is notably more abstract than a conventional performance clip, using the observer and control-panel setup as its central visual device.
