Synopsis

Johnny Marr and Bernard Sumner travel through the Philippines in a colorful, loosely structured video that favors atmosphere over narrative. They move through streets, local scenery, and striking volcanic landscapes while the song's bright guitar and electronic textures provide the momentum. The centerpiece is their visit to Taal Volcano, where the musicians appear against the dramatic terrain. Scenic shots, candid-looking movement, and flashes of on-screen text give the film an adventurous, travelogue-like quality rather than presenting a conventional performance video.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was filmed in the Philippines, with Taal Volcano providing its most memorable setting.
  • Taal was still active when the filming took place. Johnny Marr reportedly came close to falling into the volcanic crater during the shoot.
  • At least two edits circulated. One places fragments of the lyrics and the word "electronic" over the imagery, while another removes the text for a simpler presentation.
  • The version included on the 2006 *Get the Message - The Best of Electronic* limited-edition DVD is the text-based edit.
  • The video promotes the album edit of "Get the Message," rather than one of the later DNA remix versions.

Lyrics

I've always thought of you as my brick wall
Built like an angel, six feet tall
Six feet tall
And when you go away, I start to weep
You're too expensive girl to keep
Isn't it sweet?

I don't know where to begin, living in sin
How can we talk? Look where you've been
I've counted the nights of living in sin
How can we talk? Look where we've been

Take my independent point of view
