Synopsis

Duncan Sheik's "Wishful Thinking" video connects the singer's reflective, melancholy song with Alfonso Cuaron's modern adaptation of Charles Dickens' *Great Expectations*. Rather than presenting a separate narrative, it works as a soundtrack-style montage, using footage from the film to evoke its themes of desire, romantic uncertainty, disappointment and emotional release. The visuals place Sheik's song within the movie's atmospheric world, linking its meditation on hope and self-deception to Finn's complicated relationship with Estella.

Factoids & Trivia

  • "Wishful Thinking" was written specifically in response to *Great Expectations*. Sheik said director Alfonso Cuaron asked him to create a song based on the film's themes.
  • The song was the first single from *Great Expectations: The Album*, released by Atlantic Records. The soundtrack album arrived in January 1998, shortly before the movie's wide U.S. release.
  • The video uses footage from *Great Expectations*, making it a feature-film music video rather than a conventional performance piece. Atlantic promoted the clip through its online screening room during the soundtrack campaign.
  • Sheik later said the song did not have much presence within the film itself, but gained a life of its own through radio and video exposure.
  • The track was produced by Sheik and Peter Nashel, with Mark Plati handling the mix. The recording features guitars by Sheik and Gerry Leonard, bass by Plati, and drums by Tim Newton.
  • The video was listed among the feature-film music video nominees in Billboard's 1998 music-video coverage.

Lyrics

Listen to the waves,
Everything communicates
Will it ever be
Anything more than wishful thinking?

Oh no there you go
Looked away and missed the show
how much wasted time
Will you survive?

Feel the blades of grass
How it brings you back
it will always be
...
