Synopsis
Set in a shadowy, wintry forest, the video presents "One Caress" as a dreamlike procession rather than a conventional band performance. Depeche Mode appear among trees and drifting mist while a succession of children, older people, a ferryman, a pregnant woman, a Native American figure, and other solitary characters pass through the landscape. String players are also woven into the imagery, reinforcing the song's mournful orchestral character. The result is an atmospheric, symbolic short film about isolation, passage, and fleeting human connection.
Factoids & Trivia
- The video was filmed on November 1, 1993, at Tekakwitha Woods Forest Preserve in Charles, Illinois, during the period of the Devotional Tour.
- The production used an unusually large supporting cast. The official credits list children, older adults, a ferryman, a fisherman, a pregnant girl, a Native American performer, and several instrumentalists.
- The credited cello and violin players reflect the song's prominent orchestral arrangement, which was built around a substantial string section rather than Depeche Mode's usual electronic framework.
- "One Caress" was originally released in 1993 as the B-side of "I Feel You" outside the United States. The American label later promoted it as a US single, making the video a comparatively unusual promotional release for an album track.
- The clip was later preserved on the expanded 2002 edition of "The Videos 86>98" and included again in the 2016 "Video Singles Collection."
