Synopsis

Deana Carter performs around an old Southern farmhouse as the video moves between the present and memories of a summer long ago. Flashbacks follow a teenage girl discovering first love with a young man on the porch, in a swing, on country roads, and beside railroad tracks. Scenes with her grandparents deepen the sense of family and place. The grown woman revisits the landscape, where familiar locations now carry the bittersweet weight of a romance that has ended and a season that cannot return.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was filmed at Old Oaks Farm near Guthrie, Kentucky, with additional scenes shot within roughly a mile of the property. The historic mansion, surrounding fields, a nearby hay barn, Fairgrounds Road, and a CSX rail yard all appear in the production.
  • Location scout Chris Farren remembered passing the farm as a child and approached its owners without an appointment to ask about filming there. The crew and Carter arrived only a few days later.
  • Bad weather became an unexpected part of the production. Rain disrupted many takes, forcing major changes to the planned storyline and leading to extensive use of filters in the finished video.
  • The video's rural setting closely mirrors the song's nostalgic coming-of-age perspective. Songwriter Matraca Berg drew on memories of summers at her grandparents' farm in Wisconsin when writing "Strawberry Wine," helping give the visual treatment its strong sense of place.
  • Released in 1996, the video helped establish Carter's image during the breakthrough of her debut album, *Did I Shave My Legs for This?* The song became a two-week No. 1 on the Billboard country chart and later developed into one of the most recognizable nostalgia songs in 1990s country music.

Lyrics

He was working through college on my grandpa's farm.
I was thirsting for knowledge and he had a car. (yeah)
I was caught somewhere between a woman and a child.
When one restless summer we found love growing wild.
On the banks of the river on a well beaten path.
It's funny how those memories they last.
Like strawberry wine and seventeen.
The hot July moon saw everything.
My first taste of love oh bittersweet.
The green on the vine.
Like strawberry wine.

I still remember when thirty was old.
