Lyrics

There's such a sad love
Deep in your eyes, a kind of pale jewel
Open and closed within your eyes
I'll place the sky within your eyes

There's such a fooled heart
Beating so fast in search of new dreams
A love that will last within your heart
I'll place the moon within your heart

CHORUS
As the pain sweeps through
Makes no sense for you
Every thrill has gone
...

This song reminds me of my (ex?) girlfriend (long story, don't ask). Two people, star crossed, maybe in the right place but at the wrong time.

And the lyrics... Of a girl who is searching for something, carrying with her a deep sadness that nobody sees unless they see, REALLY SEE, into her eyes. Searching for the next thrill that ultimately turns out to be a hollow empty promise of things that might have been but never were. In the end, it "wasn't too much fun at all".

And in the background, a guy who is there for her, falling in love.

For an artist who has done so much with and for the music video form, it's strange that - aside from the _Let's Dance_ period and a few random clips - it's not easy to see his clips anymore. I somewhat hesitate to review this one, because it may not be easy for interested parties to find (it is on the excellent Rykovision compilation tape _Bowie - The Video Collection_) - on the other hand, it's a surprisingly lovely (if surreal) piece that deserves mention.

If nothing else, it's one of the more creative takes on the video subgenre of songs derived from movie soundtracks - and the further subgenre of ones from movies aimed at a family audience. In this case, the film is Jim Henson's _Labyrinth_, in which Bowie starred.

Usually, these kind of videos are terribly dull and unoriginal - a simple case of cutting between a singer and the clips from the movie - but this one works things a little more creatively. It mainly uses the movie clips during an instrumental bridge that precedes the last chorus (and the dwarf character Hoggle shows up in the main, original portion of the clip) - the rest of the video is a sort of short, original fantasy story:

A young woman in her apartment finds that her copy machine is suddenly running off pictures of a handsome stranger (Bowie). She places one upon her wall and can't help gazing at it - in fact she's fallen for this person she's never met.

At the same time, Bowie is in an elegant little house not too far away, apparently singing to someone - it turns out his attention is focused on a painting that is of the young woman.

Searching for him, she actually gets as far as the door of his house - even opens it - but she leaves before he sees her. There's some kind of bond between the two, but it seems destined to be unfulfilled.

The song itself is one of my personal favorite Bowie ballads, and the predominantly black-and-white visuals complement it very well. It's a most unusual video, but it's well-worth seeing.
