Synopsis

Shot in stark black and white, the video places Dave Matthews inside a smoky nightclub while the rest of Dave Matthews Band performs onstage behind him. Matthews sits at the bar, drinking, smoking, and singing as the camera moves between his isolated presence and the band's performance. Near the end, he leaves the bar and enters a backstage area, where a waiter hands him a guitar. He then joins the band onstage, turning the song's private, dreamlike mood into a full-band performance.

Factoids & Trivia

• "Crush" was released in 1998 as the third single from *Before These Crowded Streets*.

• The album version runs for 8:09, while the video uses a substantially shorter edit of about 4:28. The radio version is shorter still, at approximately 4:12.

• The song was reportedly close to being left off *Before These Crowded Streets* after the band struggled with it during recording. Bassist Stefan Lessard's opening bass line helped establish the arrangement and gave the track its distinctive starting point.

• The video was included on the band's 2001 compilation *The Videos 1994-2001*, which collected the group's music videos from its early career.
