Synopsis

Cyndi Lauper performs "You Don't Know" in a loose, impressionistic video filmed around Washington Square in New York City. Close-ups of her red lips and shots of Lauper singing on the ground are intercut with images of shoes, street scenes, and performance footage. Rather than presenting a conventional narrative, the clip builds an urban collage around Lauper's restless delivery and outspoken lyrics. It closes on a quiet image of a young Japanese boy named Grayson.

Factoids & Trivia

• The video was filmed in Washington Square, New York City, in early September 1996, several months before the song appeared on the album Sisters of Avalon.

• "You Don't Know" was released as the lead single from Sisters of Avalon and marked Lauper's return to the pop and dance marketplace after the comparatively lower profile of her previous album, Hat Full of Stars.

• The child who appears at the end of the video is named Grayson. He was six years old at the time and was hand-picked by Lauper for the closing scene.

• The song's blunt language attracted attention in the United Kingdom because the original single retained the word "bullshit" rather than removing it for a radio-friendly edit.

• A range of club remixes by producers including Tony Moran and Junior Vasquez helped the single reach No. 16 on the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart.
