Synopsis
Neil Finn begins with a miniature dollhouse floating above his hands before releasing it into the air. An enormous, open-sided house then appears, allowing the members of Crowded House to enter separately and assemble inside. The band performs in one of its rooms as domestic scenes, maps of New Zealand, toy houses, and a lively party unfold around them. Eventually, the musicians leave the house, leaving behind an empty room, swinging chandelier, and Paul Hester's unattended drum kit.
Factoids & Trivia
- The video was filmed in Melbourne, Australia, and released in 1987.
- Its central visual idea turns the song's imagery of rooms, strangers, and private lives into a literal dollhouse world. The oversized set exposes the interior while preserving the feeling of a home that is somehow unfamiliar.
- Neil Finn has explained that the song's opening lyric came from hearing a neighboring couple while he was sleeping in his manager's spare room in Los Angeles during 1985 and 1986. The mysterious sounds led him to imagine what other people might be doing in their private worlds.
- "World Where You Live" was the second single from Crowded House's debut album, but the first single from the record to be released internationally.
- The song reached No. 65 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and No. 43 in Australia.
- The video was later included in the Crowded House video compilation "Dreaming: The Videos," released in 2002.
