Synopsis

Crowded House perform "Now We're Getting Somewhere" in a straightforward live setting filmed at Mt Buller, Victoria, during the band's 1986 Australian tour. The clip focuses on Neil Finn, Paul Hester and Nick Seymour on stage, with the wintry resort location providing the backdrop. Touring keyboardist Gill Civil also appears briefly, playing melodica and synthesizer. Rather than presenting a scripted storyline, the video captures the young band in concert as it promoted its self-titled debut album.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was filmed at Mt Buller and the Kooroora venue in Victoria in 1986.
  • Gill Civil's first performance with Crowded House took place at Mt Buller, and the filming happened at the same time. She can be seen briefly playing melodica and keyboards.
  • The song was released as the third single from the band's 1986 debut album. It reached No. 63 in Australia and No. 33 in New Zealand.
  • The track was recorded in Los Angeles during the album sessions. Neil Finn later recalled that session musicians Jerry Scheff and Jim Keltner were brought in to achieve the desired shuffle feel, replacing Nick Seymour and Paul Hester for the recording.
  • The video was later included on the 2002 Crowded House compilation DVD *Dreaming: The Videos*.

Lyrics

It never used to be that bad
But neither was it great
Somewhere in the middle than
Content and much too safe
Ooh tell me please
Why it takes so long
To realise when there's something wrong

Well lay me out with your heart
Now we're gettin' somewhere
Push me back to the start
Now we're gettin' someplace
Take me out let me breathe
