Synopsis

Breakfast Club's "Right On Track" turns a simple morning into a brightly colored pop-art fantasia. The band eats breakfast, watches television, and suddenly realizes it is running late before launching into a frantic performance inside a room packed with oversized props, toys, and visual gags. Cartoonish band imagery, dancers in chicken costumes, animated-looking objects, and rapid-fire changes give the video a playful, surreal tone that matches the song's restless dance-floor energy.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was nominated for Best Art Direction in a Video at the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards.
  • The elaborate set was built by Allee Willis, who later became best known as a songwriter for "September" by Earth, Wind & Fire and for co-writing the music and lyrics to *The Color Purple* musical.
  • Willis described the production as one of her first set-design jobs and kept photographs from the shoot, including images of the set and a customized Pinto used in the video.
  • The video uses grotesque caricature puppets and exaggerated props rather than presenting the band in a conventional performance setting.
  • The room's visual style has often been compared to the colorful absurdity of *Pee-wee's Playhouse*, with the musicians surrounded by toys, knickknacks, unusual furniture, and surreal stage business.
  • Angelyne appears among the performers credited for the video.
  • "Right On Track" became Breakfast Club's biggest hit, reaching No. 7 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1987. The song's success helped make its unusually theatrical video a recurring MTV-era curiosity.

Lyrics

Gonna make a move that knocks you over
Watch this turn one's gonna put you away
But I'm doing my very best dancing
Every time you're looking the other way
I could move out to the left for a while
I could slide to the right for a while
I could get up and back
Right on track
But is right on track
Is that gonna get you back

I've been trying to get your attention
And I'm very, very close to thinking of a way
I could be big and tough and other funny stuff
