Synopsis

XTC turn a teenage dance night into a colorful piece of late-1970s pop surrealism. Colin Moulding first approaches a seemingly reserved woman, who suddenly joins the party, before the band appears inside a cartoonish pink Cadillac against a shifting backdrop. The setting then opens into a sparse soundstage filled with bright props, dancing women, playful choreography, and deliberately obvious mime. The clip's artificial scenery, exaggerated costumes, and disappearing guitar gag give the song's nostalgic celebration an enjoyably homemade, comic-book quality.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was made in 1979 as a promotional film for XTC's fifth single, and was produced alongside the video for "Making Plans for Nigel." The two clips were shot during the same period, with "Life Begins at the Hop" put together quickly.
  • Its visual centerpiece is a dummy pink Cadillac, filmed against an artificial backdrop that resembles a cartoon city or domino-like skyscraper.
  • The dance sequence uses go-go performers associated with Kenny Everett's television show "Hot Gossip." Perri Lister, later known for her relationship with Billy Idol, is among those identified as appearing in the clip.
  • The obvious studio construction is part of the video's charm: visible lighting, painted scenery, mime performance, and cardboard-style props make it feel closer to a television variety segment than a polished narrative film.
  • The song was Colin Moulding's first A-side composition for XTC and the band's first single to enter the UK chart. It was also the first XTC release to feature guitarist Dave Gregory.
  • Moulding based the song on youth dances he had attended at St. Peter's Church in Penhill, Swindon. The video replaces that real-world setting with an exaggerated fantasy version of a "hop," emphasizing the song's mixture of teenage nostalgia and New Wave absurdity.

Lyrics

O ladybird
I have heard you wish to walk me through your garden
I crave your pardon if I woke you with my thinking
Ladybird
O ladybird
I have heard you wish to walk me through your meadow
You'll spread no wings to fly in fright if I'm beside you
Ladybird
All through the winter time
When wood was warm and splintered
Time seemed longer than a goods train
Now that spring is back again I'll ask your name
Your name
