Synopsis
"Weird Al" Yankovic's animated parody follows a disastrous visit to Jurassic Park. A tourist arrives expecting a thrilling dinosaur attraction, but the genetically recreated creatures quickly turn the island into a nightmare of chases, destruction, and gruesome comic violence. The clay characters reenact familiar situations from the 1993 film while adding deliberately silly visual gags, including dinosaur attacks, park chaos, and a memorable appearance by Barney the Dinosaur. The video ends with the park's dangers proving impossible for even its musical narrator to escape.
Factoids & Trivia
- The song parodies Richard Harris' recording of "MacArthur Park," replacing the original song's romantic melodrama with a comic retelling of the recently released Jurassic Park film.
- This was Yankovic's first music video made entirely as an animated production. Earlier clips such as "Dare to Be Stupid" and "Money for Nothing/Beverly Hillbillies" had used animation, but not from beginning to end.
- Most of the video uses stop-motion clay animation. The production team transformed a private Los Angeles residence into a working clay animation studio and completed the project during July and August 1993 for an October release.
- The clip combines clay animation with drawn sequences, including the Mr. DNA segment and a brief traditionally animated dance sequence.
- Steven Spielberg reportedly approved the project after reading Yankovic's lyrics. The video then turned recognizable moments and characters from Jurassic Park into miniature slapstick set pieces.
- The video received a nomination for Best Short Form Music Video at the 37th Grammy Awards in 1995. It lost to the Rolling Stones' "Love Is Strong."
- The clip also appeared in animation-festival programs, where its combination of clay figures, drawn animation, horror imagery, and pop-song parody attracted attention beyond the usual music-video audience.
