Synopsis

The Spice Girls arrive in a lively Irish neighborhood and knock on doors before breaking into the song's signature hand-action dance. The setting then shifts to Rathdrum, County Wicklow, where they join local children in skipping, hopscotch, hula hooping, pat-a-cake, and other playground games. Dressed in colorful retro outfits, the group brings a playful burst of energy to the community fair, eventually performing "Stop" onstage for an audience of locals young and old.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was filmed in Ireland on January 27, 1998, using Carnew Street in Dublin and the town of Rathdrum in County Wicklow.
  • Melanie Brown later said the production had no fixed storyboard. The video developed through trial and error, giving it the loose, spontaneous feel that became part of its charm.
  • Local residents were recruited to appear in the video, although the production reportedly kept the Spice Girls' identity secret until filming began.
  • Homes used in the Dublin sequences were reportedly paid 100 Irish punts for the day's filming. Residents also agreed not to photograph or film the group, helping keep paparazzi away from the set.
  • The hand-action routine from the chorus was not only a video gimmick. The Spice Girls also used it during live performances, where it became an easy dance for fans to copy.
  • "Stop" was written and recorded while the group was simultaneously filming the movie "Spice World." The song reflected their frustration with an exhausting work schedule and management pressures.
  • Released in March 1998, "Stop" reached No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart. It became the Spice Girls' only original-tenure UK single not to reach No. 1, ending their run of six consecutive chart-toppers.
