Synopsis
Richard Marx finds himself in a baseball fantasy, suiting up for the Chicago Cubs in the deciding game of a World Series against the Oakland Athletics. With two outs in the ninth inning, he is called on to pinch-hit against Dennis Eckersley. As Marx performs with his band on the Oakland Coliseum field, the game builds toward a dramatic final at-bat. After hitting a game-winning home run, Marx wakes backstage and realizes the championship was only a dream before his concert.
Factoids & Trivia
- The video was released in 1992 to promote "Take This Heart," the third single from Marx's 1991 album, "Rush Street."
- Marx was born in Chicago and has long been associated with the Chicago Cubs, making the team's appearance in the fantasy sequence a personal touch.
- Baseball Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley appears as himself. He was a close friend of Marx and had previously pitched for the Cubs.
- Bob Uecker provides the baseball commentary. His call of the imagined Cubs victory continues to echo after Marx wakes up backstage.
- The video also features Oakland Athletics stars Rickey Henderson and Jose Canseco, along with managers Jim Lefebvre and Tony La Russa.
- The performance scenes were filmed at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, which doubles as the Athletics' home field in the story.
- The baseball sequence contains a deliberate sports-logic error: because Oakland is the home team, the Athletics would still have had a chance to bat in the bottom of the ninth after Marx's home run.
- Marx later posted an original alternate ending on his official YouTube channel. In that version, Uecker ad-libbed a final line that Marx said made everyone laugh, but MTV declined to air it.
