Synopsis

Shot like a black-and-white silent film, the video follows a woman in a cloche hat as she moves through Derby while being pursued by an intense, controlling man. Her escape becomes a surreal journey through streets marked with crossroads and signs representing competing romantic impulses, including love, lust, doubt, and independence. The man attempts to overpower her through pursuit and hypnosis, but she repeatedly resists his advances. The exaggerated performances, circular iris effects, and abrupt match cuts give the story a distinctly 1920s expressionist feel.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was filmed in black and white and designed to resemble a silent movie from the 1920s and 1930s.
  • Most of the outdoor footage was shot in Derby, England, where White Town's sole member, Jyoti Mishra, was based.
  • A 16 mm Bolex camera was used for the production, helping create the clip's deliberately old-fashioned texture and contrast.
  • The recurring crossroads carry words associated with romantic choices and emotional conflicts. They function less as literal directions than as visualized dilemmas.
  • The exaggerated gestures of the woman and her pursuer draw on the theatrical acting style associated with silent cinema and German expressionist film.
  • The sequence in which the woman shuts a door on the man's arm references the surrealist film "Un Chien Andalou" (1928), made by Luis Bunuel and Salvador Dali.
  • Circular iris masks appear throughout the video, echoing early cinema techniques while directing attention toward particular looks and actions.
  • Match cuts connect the moment when the woman enters the man's bedroom with the final rope sequence, giving the ending an intentionally experimental, almost dreamlike quality.
  • Mishra appears briefly on television screens in the background, an unusual way of placing the artist into a video whose central story is carried by actors.
  • The video stars Chloe Treend as the woman.
  • "Your Woman" became a UK No. 1 hit in January 1997, while the video helped reinforce the song's deliberately retro identity.
