Synopsis

"Weird Al" Yankovic parodies James Brown's "Living in America" by turning patriotic showmanship into a musical complaint about a painful hernia. Wearing a Brown-inspired wig and surrounded by dancers, Yankovic performs with exaggerated funk-star confidence while struggling through everyday activities, including exercise, shopping, bowling, and a medical lecture. The escalating discomfort contrasts with the song's upbeat production, turning ordinary movements into elaborate physical comedy before the performance ends with a final, emphatic expression of pain.

Factoids & Trivia

• The song was recorded for Yankovic's 1986 album *Polka Party!* and released as a single on October 21, 1986.

• The parody targets "Living in America," written by Dan Hartman and Charlie Midnight and performed by James Brown for the 1985 film *Rocky IV*.

• Yankovic researched different types of hernias while writing the lyrics, which include medical terminology alongside the song's funk arrangement.

• The video was filmed on the concert set used for James Brown's performance in *Rocky IV*. Its Las Vegas-style presentation recreates the visual language of the original, including showgirl-inspired dancers.

• Choreographer Chester Whitmore helped Yankovic reproduce James Brown-style dance movements. Yankovic later described himself as a non-dancer who approached the routine analytically.

• The medical-classroom sequence turns the song's list of hernia types into a mock educational presentation, complete with a "Top Ten Hernias of the Week" chart.

• The video was included on *The "Weird Al" Yankovic Video Library*, released on VHS in May 1992.
