Synopsis

Set in a stark, otherworldly chamber, the video follows Marcella Detroit as she watches over a comatose man who appears close to death. Her pleas for him to stay are interrupted by Siobhan Fahey, who emerges as a glamorous, sinister Angel of Death. Descending from a glowing staircase, Fahey taunts Detroit and tries to claim the man's soul. The two women struggle over him until he finally awakens, allowing love and life to triumph over death.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video's central conflict presents Detroit and Fahey as opposing forces: Detroit represents love and life, while Fahey embodies death.
  • The concept drew inspiration from the 1953 science-fiction film "Cat-Women of the Moon." Fahey's descent down the staircase was also influenced by Powell and Pressburger's 1946 fantasy film "A Matter of Life and Death."
  • Fahey described her appearance as an "unhinged Victorian heroine" combined with Suzi Quatro and Labelle. Her character's glittering catsuit and dramatic makeup became one of the video's defining images.
  • The shoot took place over a single day and ran late because much of the time was spent filming Detroit's sections. Fahey later recalled drinking a bottle of vodka while waiting, which contributed to the heightened, unruly energy of her performance.
  • In some versions, the opening uses a variation on the famous "When shall we three meet again" line from "Macbeth," changing it to "When shall we two meet again."
  • The video won Best British Video at the 1993 BRIT Awards and Best Video at the 1993 Music Week Awards.
  • Its theatrical gothic imagery made it a natural target for parody, including a widely remembered spoof by French and Saunders.
