Synopsis

In a dim, deserted alley, Beth Gibbons and a young boy drift through the air as if suspended in a dream. Their movements alternate between graceful floating and sudden, unnatural jolts, while shadowy figures appear in nearby windows and doorways. The video creates a sense of isolation and unease rather than following a conventional narrative. Its surreal imagery suggests two people trapped in an intangible space, disconnected from the world around them and from the physical rules governing it.

• "Only You" was released as the third single from Portishead's self-titled second album on March 2, 1998.

• The floating performers were filmed underwater in large tanks and later composited into a nighttime alley setting.

• The water was kept at approximately 30 degrees Celsius so the performers could remain submerged for extended periods.

• The underwater technique was chosen to create a dreamlike sense of slow motion. Air bubbles were removed from the imagery, making the setting feel detached from any recognizable physical environment.

• The video was included in the 2003 Directors Label collection devoted to Chris Cunningham, alongside behind-the-scenes photographs, storyboards, sketchbook material, and an interview.
