Synopsis

Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart take part in a mysterious seance, apparently attempting to contact someone who has crossed over. The ritual grows increasingly unsettling as the participants prepare drinks and wait for a response from the spirit world. The supernatural atmosphere intensifies until Lennox is trapped inside a burning house. Stewart rushes to save her, bringing the video to a dramatic close that leaves the seance's consequences deliberately ambiguous.

Factoids & Trivia

  • "Angel" was released as a single from Eurythmics' 1989 album *We Too Are One* on April 23, 1990. It became the duo's final new single for almost a decade.
  • Annie Lennox said the song was inspired by the death of her aunt. Its lyrics describe a woman who has died by suicide and gone to meet her maker.
  • The video's occult imagery reportedly kept it out of MTV's US rotation. It was, however, shown on VH-1 in the United States.
  • The clip's dark supernatural imagery contrasts sharply with the song's gentle, adult-contemporary ballad style, making it one of the more unsettling Eurythmics videos from the late 1980s and early 1990s.
  • "Angel" reached No. 23 on the UK Singles Chart but did not enter the US Billboard Hot 100.
  • Lennox later recorded a new version of "Angel" for the 1997 charity album *Diana, Princess of Wales: Tribute*.

Lyrics

Underneath this canopy of snow
Where fifty-seven winters
Took their toll
Where did you go?

And I believed in you
I believed in you
Like Elvis Presley
Singing psalms on a Sunday
(Where did you go?)

Well she's gone to meet her maker
Back to where she came from
