Synopsis

Set against stark interiors and desolate outdoor landscapes, the video presents Depeche Mode in a theatrical, dreamlike world of red curtains, hanging lightbulbs, stark monochrome imagery, and enigmatic figures. Rather than following a conventional narrative, it moves through a series of symbolic tableaux that echo the band's established visual language. Familiar costumes, props, and character types from earlier Depeche Mode videos reappear, turning the clip into a surreal self-portrait of the group and its visual history.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video uses the Zephyr Mix rather than the longer album version of "In Your Room."
  • Released on January 10, 1994, the single was the fourth and final single from *Songs of Faith and Devotion*.
  • The clip was conceived as a retrospective of Depeche Mode's previous videos. Its imagery alludes to "Strangelove," "I Feel You," "Walking in My Shoes," "Halo," "Enjoy the Silence," "Personal Jesus," and "Condemnation."
  • The video was made during a particularly unstable period for the band. The possibility that it could be their final video was taken seriously, which gives its retrospective structure an unusually conclusive feeling.
  • "In Your Room" was the last Depeche Mode single released with Alan Wilder as a band member, and the last Depeche Mode music video in which he appeared.
