Synopsis

A lone woman hitchhikes along a stark Spanish road before being picked up by Depeche Mode, who travel through the landscape in an old car. The journey unfolds in a dreamlike mix of roadside encounters, empty streets, religious imagery, and strange, theatrical poses. The band's detached presence and the woman's shifting role create an uneasy, surreal atmosphere, turning the song's driving imagery into a stylized trip where control, movement, and desire remain deliberately ambiguous.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was released in 1987 to accompany the remix version of "Behind The Wheel." A longer edit using the album version appeared in 1988.
  • It was filmed near Malaga, Spain, and uses the region's dry roads, sparse buildings, and dramatic open spaces as a major part of its visual identity.
  • Italian actress Ippolita Santarelli appears as the hitchhiker who joins the band's journey.
  • The clip continues the visual world established in "Never Let Me Down Again," making the two videos feel like connected chapters in the same strange road movie.
  • The deliberately rough, grainy black-and-white look became a defining part of Depeche Mode's late-1980s image.
  • The song was issued as the third single from the 1987 album "Music for the Masses." Its road theme was reinforced by the single's pairing with "Route 66," a cover associated with travel and American car culture.
