Synopsis

Set during an ornate late-18th-century salon gathering at Carlton House, the video casts Annie Lennox as a woman confronting the emotional shock of seeing her former lover arrive with another woman. Surrounded by powdered wigs, lavish costumes, and aristocratic ceremony, she watches the party unfold while performing the song's portrait of romantic devastation. Hugh Laurie appears as Prince George, while John Malkovich plays the groom whose presence turns the elegant celebration into a quietly cruel spectacle.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The period setting draws on the world of 18th-century costume dramas, with the video specifically associated with films such as "Dangerous Liaisons" and "Amadeus."
  • Hugh Laurie plays Prince George, and John Malkovich appears as the groom. Their casting gives the video a distinctly theatrical, ensemble-driven feel rather than presenting Lennox in a conventional pop performance setting.
  • The video was nominated for British Video of the Year at the 1993 BRIT Awards.
  • It also received a 1993 MTV Video Music Award nomination for Best Female Video.
  • "Walking on Broken Glass" was part of Lennox's 1992 solo debut album, "Diva," which established her post-Eurythmics visual identity through sharply contrasting character pieces and elaborate period imagery.
