Synopsis
The Go-Go's turn an airport departure into a glossy, playful summer fantasy. Belinda Carlisle arrives by taxi as the band waits atop a pile of luggage, then the setting gives way to bright performance scenes and deliberately exaggerated travel imagery. The video builds toward the group's famous synchronized water-skiing sequence, echoing the cover of the 1982 album Vacation. After a series of cheerful close-ups, the action freezes into a photograph that is revealed to be part of a discarded travel brochure.
Factoids & Trivia
- The video was filmed in a single day with a budget of approximately $50,000, a substantial increase over the Go-Go's earlier low-budget clips.
- Jane Wiedlin later recalled that the band initially regarded music-video shoots as an irritating interruption rather than a glamorous opportunity.
- The group reportedly drank champagne during the long shoot. Wiedlin said the alcohol was especially apparent in the closing close-ups, where the band members look noticeably bleary-eyed.
- The water-skiing image was designed to match the cover artwork of the Vacation album, giving the record and video a deliberately coordinated visual identity.
- The final image turns the entire clip into part of a travel brochure, with the photograph being swept away as airport debris. This visual gag undercuts the polished vacation fantasy with a deliberately disposable ending.
- The song became the Go-Go's second and final US Top 10 hit, reaching No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1982.
