Synopsis

Adam Ant is cast as a male Cinderella, left behind while his moustached step-sisters head to a grand ball. In a cluttered kitchen, the Ants encourage him until Diana Dors appears as his Fairy Godmother, accompanied by five dancers. She transforms him into a flamboyant Regency prince, allowing him to make a spectacular entrance at the ball. Adam and the guests perform the signature arm-crossing dance before he smashes a mirror and appears in a series of glamorous and cinematic character guises.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was released in 1981, during the peak of the Antmania phenomenon, and its elaborate costumes, sets and choreography were unusually ambitious for the period.
  • Diana Dors plays Adam's Fairy Godmother. The appearance was among her last on-screen performances.
  • The signature dance became widely imitated. Choreographer Stephanie Coleman said the four principal hand movements represented pride, courage, humor and flair.
  • Chris Hughes, the band's drummer and producer, played the song's open-tuned acoustic guitar riff. In the video, Marco Pirroni mimes the part on both a full-size harp and a miniature harp.
  • The closing transformations reference several screen icons, including Clint Eastwood's Man with No Name, Alice Cooper, Rudolph Valentino's Sheik Ahmed Ben Hassan and Marlon Brando's Vito Corleone.
  • An alternate edit replaces the Vito Corleone appearance with Adam's dandy highwayman character from the "Stand and Deliver" video.
  • Adam Ant has said that the song's idea was connected to Beau Brummell, the celebrated Regency-era arbiter of men's fashion.

Lyrics

Adam Ant/Marco Pirroni

Don't you ever, don't you ever
stop being dandy, showing me you're handsome
don't you ever, don't you ever
stop being dandy, showing me you're handsome

Prince Charming
Prince Charming
ridicule is nothing to be scared of
don't you ever, don't you ever
stop being dandy, showing me you're handsome
