Synopsis
In the rain, t.A.T.u. perform as two schoolgirls trapped behind a tall fence while a crowd watches from the other side. They plead, shout, and cling to one another, eventually kissing as the onlookers react with curiosity and disapproval. Snow falls during a dreamlike interlude before the girls find a way beyond the barrier. As they walk hand in hand toward an open field, the video reverses its perspective: the fence has isolated the watching crowd, not the two singers.
Factoids & Trivia
- The video was originally made for the Russian song "Ya Soshla S Uma," later re-recorded in English as "All the Things She Said." The English version uses footage from the earlier production, with some shots removed or altered because of lip-syncing differences.
- Filming took place at Moscow's Khodynka Field from September 4 to 7, 2000. The bleak former airfield provided the video's desolate setting.
- More than 90 people were involved in the shoot, including extras. The large painted wall used alongside the fence reportedly cost about $3,000 to build.
- After the main filming at Khodynka Field, the wall and fence were moved to Kutuzov Avenue so the production could capture passing traffic before returning the focus to the girls.
- Yulia Volkova and Lena Katina were both 15 when the original video was filmed. Their school uniforms, same-sex kiss, and deliberately provocative imagery became the center of the video's international controversy.
- Several television outlets edited the kiss or declined to show the video. The controversy nevertheless helped make the clip one of the defining pop visuals of the early 2000s.
- The closing reversal, in which the spectators are revealed to be the ones enclosed by the fence, gave the video's provocation a clearer visual idea: conformity and public judgment are presented as another kind of confinement.
- In June 2016, the official video became the first Russian music video to receive a Vevo Certified Award after passing 100 million views on YouTube.
