Synopsis

Steps turn the video into a miniature movie studio, moving through a series of affectionate Hollywood parodies while performing "Say You'll Be Mine." H and Claire appear as Romeo and Juliet, H and Faye channel Austin Powers, H and Lisa recreate Titanic, Lee and Claire visit There's Something About Mary, Lee and Faye become Batman Returns characters, and Lee and Lisa take on Armageddon. The group alternates between elaborate film scenes, singing performances, dance sequences, and behind-the-scenes-style imagery, creating a bright, fast-moving celebration of cinema and pop spectacle.

Factoids & Trivia

• The concept came from the band themselves. Each member selected movies they wanted to reference, after which the production had to find a coherent way to combine the different ideas.

• The video was filmed on October 7, 1999, at Park Royal studios in London, and was released in December 1999.

• Some shots reportedly combined as many as eight separate layers of video. These included dancing in the foreground, film scenes, vocal close-ups, green-screen material, film-reel effects, and a theater-style proscenium arch.

• The Romeo and Juliet sequence used a real fish tank brought into the studio. Shooting through the glass and water required additional lighting and careful positioning.

• The Titanic sequence featured a specially built section of the ship's bow. Its sky was created with a painted backdrop rather than a digital background.

• Lee and Lisa's Armageddon scene was created with green-screen work because the aircraft-hangar setting could not be filmed as a conventional location.

• Claire chose the There's Something About Mary reference, including one of the video's more risqué comic moments. The choice was considered bold because Steps were still early in their career and were generally presented with a very clean-cut image.

• The song was the first Steps single to give all five members lead-vocal parts, making the ensemble structure of the video especially useful for distributing individual close-ups and performance moments.

• "Say You'll Be Mine" was released as a double A-side with Steps' cover of Kylie Minogue's "Better the Devil You Know." The combined single reached number four on the UK Singles Chart in January 2000.
