The Godfather: Part II

Feature Film | USA | 1974

Wiki

Synopsis

Michael Corleone expands the Corleone family's criminal empire while trying to make it legitimate, but betrayal and violence increasingly isolate him from those closest to him. In parallel, the film follows the early life of his father, Vito, from his escape from Sicily to his rise in New York's immigrant community. The two timelines reveal how power, family loyalty, and corruption pass from one generation to the next.

Factoids & Trivia

  • Released in 1974, the film was the first sequel to win the Academy Award for Best Picture.
  • It received 11 Academy Award nominations and won six, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Dramatic Score, and Best Art Direction.
  • Robert De Niro became the first actor to win an Academy Award for portraying a character previously played by another Oscar-winning actor. Marlon Brando had won for playing Vito Corleone in the first film.
  • The production contrasts two visual and dramatic periods: Michael's modernizing criminal organization and Vito's early years in New York. This parallel structure was an unusually ambitious approach for a major studio sequel.
  • Much of the dialogue in the Sicily and Little Italy sequences is spoken in Sicilian or Italian, with English subtitles. De Niro reportedly spent months learning the Sicilian dialect for the role.
  • The film's original theatrical running time was approximately 200 minutes, including an intermission in some presentations.
  • The Library of Congress added The Godfather Part II to the National Film Registry in 1993, recognizing it as a culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant work.
  • The film was later incorporated into The Godfather Saga, a chronological television presentation that combined footage from the first two films with additional material.
