Synopsis

After the Rebel Alliance is driven from its hidden base, Luke Skywalker travels to Dagobah to study the Force under the eccentric Jedi Master Yoda. Meanwhile, Han Solo, Princess Leia, and their companions flee Imperial forces across the galaxy. Their paths converge when Darth Vader sets a trap that forces Luke to confront a devastating revelation about his past and future.

Factoids & Trivia

• George Lucas independently financed the production, using profits from the original Star Wars to support the film and expand Lucasfilm's special-effects operations.

• Principal photography used Elstree Studios in England and location work in Finse, Norway. Blizzards and avalanches complicated the Norwegian shoot, which supplied the wintry landscapes of Hoth.

• Yoda was deliberately kept out of much of the film's pre-release publicity so audiences could discover the character in theaters. Frank Oz also created a detailed biography for Yoda to help shape the puppet's performance.

• Industrial Light & Magic received a Special Achievement Academy Award for Visual Effects at the 53rd Academy Awards, honoring the film's miniature work, animation, compositing, and other effects techniques.
