Wireless Wi-Fi Video in Sight

Do you know wireless LAN, or Wi-Fi or WLAN? Sure. This question is an easy bet after the multi-million dollar Intel campaign to promote its sales brand 'Intel Centrino'. Today nearly every mobile device has integrated Wi-Fi chips from vendors hardly anyone knows- or do you know Atheros, the WLAN leader from Santa Clara, CA?

Anyway, the technology and the subsequent services enabled and derrived from this fascinating technology are the more interesting side of things.

Today, Wi-Fi is bound to a relatively low bandwidth of about 54MBit/s - and although this seems fat compared to your homebased DSL-line, this bandwidth has to be shared among users connected to the same Access Point.

Anyway, these hurdles will be overcome in the near future and updated WLAN standards like WiMAX and the tounge-twisting IEEE 802.11n protocols will come into effect unveiling fantastic services.

We will see wireless phones connected to the internet and people talking with their friends over VoIP/SIP phones. Mobile multimedia internet appliances that enable you to listen to webcasts or watch your favourite TV show or other streamable content, in HDTV! This is an area that will profoundly raise the importance of short form media - now you know why this article is relevant in Clipland Blog, btw.

But as with all new thrilling technology news and advancements, we will have to wait a couple of months till first applications pop up.

For now, the second draft of the proposed IEEE standard for 100+Mbps wireless LAN is stuck in negotiations until 2007. The task group responsible for the development of the 802.11n is still digging through 12,000 comments on the proposed draft 1.0. So the road to a new generation of radio chipsets is still long - let's hope for a first step in mid 2007, and final approval in early 2008. But then the future of wireless Wi-Fi and exciting new (video) services will be bright. And then, "Entertainment will be literally in our lap".
